Ebook About
At age twenty-seven, Cassie De Pecol accomplished something remarkable. She became the first woman on record to travel to every country on Earth, and did it faster than anyone in history, male or female. She was inspired by her experiences on the Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid: both the three weeks she spent in the Panamanian wilderness and the cyberbullying she endured after the show. And it opened her eyes to the need for women to make a difference in the world. In Expedition 196, Cassie shares the secrets behind her personal triumphs and miraculous achievements. It’s the story of a dreamer and a doer who went from restless college dropout to fearless adventurer to philanthropist and humanitarian activist dedicated to female empowerment and global sustainability.Thrilling, inspiring, and unforgettable, Expedition 196 views the world through the eyes of one extraordinary young woman whose heart took her farther than most people can even imagine.

Book Expedition 196: A Personal Journal from the First Woman on Record to Travel to Every Country in the World Review :

I really wanted to like this book. I briefly followed Cassie’s journey through social media and was excited for her book.I think a lot of the online negativity got to her and it shows in the book. Most of the book is her defending her actions, thoughts, decisions, etc. It comes off very harsh. And then throughout the rest of the book it is filled with “most people are like this”..”but I am like this..”..making herself appear to be fiercer, tougher, and smarter than the average traveler. Many parts come off as egotistical. However, I did appreciate the chapter spent describing some Middle Eastern countries and her positive descriptions of Muslim people. Her descriptions of some countries were very beautiful. She talks about life before her expedition, about escaping the 9-5 and I can appreciate that.Again, I wanted to like this book but there is so much negativity in it I had to sit it down at times. It’s like the book was written for the people that criticized and hated her journey, rather than for the people that were cheering her on.
This book isn’t bad, it just isn’t what I expected. I wish there had been more stories and more detailed experiences of her travels, the countries, the people, the culture, the music, the food, etc. As someone who has traveled quite a bit and has lived abroad for 3+ years, I find these things to be the joy about traveling and the things that make people reconsider whatever stereotype they previously held about that particular country, race, or ethnicity. I think this would have been a much more successful book had she written her most moving anecdote from each of the 196 countries. The book was a quick read and I think it would have been more substantial and interesting if it were more anecdotal about each country than reflective about the difficulties and the large accomplishment. Whilst I have immense respect for her and what she has accomplished, I find her writing to sometimes be filled with a strange juxtaposition of self pity and praise, repetition of accomplishments (traveling to 196 countries and being a bullet ant), and sometimes a bit condescending (last sentence/ending). I can tell that her personality is a strong one, and the book at times seems to be more of a defensive retaliation to all of her haters rather than a positive reflection of the sweetness of her accomplishment. I think it would have been wise to use a guest writer to help her expand and detail on the positive parts and rephrase some of the negative to be less defensive or condescending whilst still conveying her authentic feelings. I found myself noticing some depression in her words when talking about how to leave a mark, life being short, and our lives being just an unimportant blip in time.I hope if she reads my review she will not be upset, as I did enjoy the book and I hope my opinion is interpreted as constructive rather than “hate”. As I said, I really respect everything she has done, everything that she stands for, and am very impressed by her. I love that she stands up for women and travel and sustainability, some of my biggest passions. I hope the documentary is more focused on the actual travel and anecdotes and culture rather than the Guinness record, because I think that’s what really everyone cares about. All the same it is worth the read and she is someone I will continue to follow.
